My absolute favorite sugar cookie recipe...

I decided to make cookies for Rosie's birthday (I love any excuse to make treats). And then I thought while I'm at it, I might as well make some for Moises' office. So a half a dozen cookies turned into 150!

Ghosts and albino bats!
My absolute favorite sugar cookie recipe comes from my best friend Jill's mom when I was growing up. I love them because they aren't too sweet and are very soft. I am a sucker for soft, chewy cookies!

Jonna's Sugar Cookies
  • 1 1/2 cup butter, softened
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 3 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 9 3/4 cups flour
  • 1 1/2 tsp salt
  • 3 tsp soda
In a very large bowl, cream together the butter, sugar, eggs and vanilla for two minutes. Mix in sour cream until fully combined.

In a separate large bowl mix together flour, salt and soda. Gradually add this to the butter mixture.

Chill dough for at least an hour to make it easier to work with. Roll out on lightly flour surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out cookies with 2 to 2 1/2 inch cookie cutters. Place cookies about 1/2 inch apart on baking sheets.

Bake at 375 for 6-8 minutes.

This will make about 120-150 cookies and they freeze really well.

Vanilla Butter Cream Frosting
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2/3 cup whole milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
In a large bowl, cream the butter until smooth. Add the remaining ingredients and mix until smooth and creamy. This will make enough for the sugar cookie recipe. Can be made a day ahead.

Yum! Those look totally yummy. I love the albino bats. I will have to make these cookies sometime soon. I will let you know how they turn out. I love baking too and am always looking for a good reason.

Just made the dough. I'm gonna chill it overnight and cook it tomorrow for dessert. We are having some people from Church over for lunch. I will let you know how they turn out. The dough is yummy. I tasted.

Oh, and this recipe made me really miss my Kitchenaid. Really bad. I thought my arm was going to fall off by the end of it.
